Commercial Thumb Turn Locks: Quarter Turn, Classroom, ADA, Mortise

Posted by National Lock Supply on Sep 10th 2026

Quick Verdict

A commercial thumbturn takes one of three forms, and ordering starts with picking the right one. A thumbturn cylinder replaces the key cylinder on the inside of a mortise lock or rim device (Schlage 09-900 and 09-905, BEST 1EA6A4, Falcon 985T, Adams Rite 4066). A thumbturn deadbolt has the turn built in (Sargent 485, Falcon D251 and D261, Accentra D262, Schlage L460). A trim thumbturn is the loose knob on a rose or escutcheon (Schlage 09-544, Accentra GF1824, Falcon AE77012). After the form, three numbers decide the part: cylinder length, cam, and door thickness. Classrooms need a handed cylinder with a rotational stop (09-905) so the inside can unlock but not lock. Accessible openings need an ADA-style turn that works without tight grasping (09-544 and 09-900). If the part number is unknown, send the lock model, door thickness and a photo of the cam to the quote desk. Orders before 3:00 p.m. EST ship same day.

What is a commercial thumb turn and which of the three forms do I need?

A thumbturn is the inside operator that locks or unlocks without a key. Commercial buyers search for it in three ways, and each form is a different category of part.

Type Where it mounts Example models When to use
Thumbturn cylinder In the cylinder bore of a mortise lock, rim device or deadlatch Schlage 09-900, BEST 1EA6A4-C140RP2, Falcon 985T, Adams Rite 4066-01 Replacing or converting a key cylinder to inside-turn only
Thumbturn built into a deadbolt Complete deadbolt, bored or mortised Sargent 485, Falcon D251, D261, Accentra D262, Schlage L460P New deadbolt or full replacement; function sets the outside side
Trim thumbturn Rose or escutcheon on the inside of a lock Schlage 09-544, 09-509, Accentra GF1824, Falcon AE77012-IT Replacing a broken knob, or converting an escutcheon to thumbturn

The category page thumbturns is the entry point for the cylinder and trim forms, and the deadbolt forms sit under deadbolts. Do not mix them: a thumbturn cylinder is a lock part, a trim thumbturn is a trim part, and neither throws a bolt on its own without the lock it was made for. When the bore is mortise-cylinder size, the mortise cylinder sizes and cams guide is the reference for length and cam.

What does quarter turn mean on a thumb turn lock?

"Quarter turn" describes a 90 degree rotation of the turn unit between locked and unlocked positions. Searchers use it two ways. Most often they want an inside turn that changes state in a 90 degree move, which suits a thumbturn on a mortise cylinder, a rim cylinder or a deadlatch. Some mean a quarter-turn cam latch on a cabinet or enclosure, which is a different category and not carried here.

For door hardware, the quarter turn is set by the cam on the back of the turn unit and by the lock case it throws. A turn unit does not carry the rotation on its own; the cam and the lock decide how far it must travel and in which direction. Because manufacturers differ, check the throw angle on the spec sheet of the specific lock before assuming a quarter turn. The practical rule is to order the cylinder or turn that names your lock in its description: the Adams Rite 4066-01 for MS locks and deadlatches, the Falcon 985T for Falcon mortise locks using the M non-deadbolt cam, and the Schlage 09-905 for L463 and L9463 classroom deadlocks.

Which thumbturn cylinder goes in a classroom or classroom security lock?

Schools ask for inside locking because the teacher must lock the door from the inside during a lockdown without stepping into the corridor. The part is a handed thumbturn cylinder with a rotational stop. The Schlage 09-905 classroom thumbturn cylinder (about $151 at NLS) is made for L463 and L9463 classroom function deadlocks and has the following properties from the product page:

  • It is handed, with a rotational stop in one direction that prevents locking from the inside but allows unlocking.
  • The stop is field reversible, so a cylinder can be moved to the opposite hand.
  • It is 1-1/8" length, ships with the L583-254 cam, and includes a compression ring and a 1/8" blocking ring for a 1-3/4" door.
  • You specify the hand of the door and the finish when you order.

The 09-900 118 NH is a second classroom thumbturn cylinder for the same L463 and L9463 deadlocks, also 1-1/8" length and handed. The functional difference between a classroom thumbturn deadbolt and a classroom mortise lock matters when you spec: the Accentra D262 is a cylinder by classroom thumbturn deadbolt where the key operates the bolt outside and the inside thumbturn retracts the bolt but will not project it.

What are ADA thumbturns and what does the 5 lbf rule mean?

ADA turns are shaped to be operated without tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist, and the operating force for a hardware part under the 2010 ADA Standards (Section 309.4) is 5 pounds maximum. A round knob or a small flat key-style turn can fail this test. A lever-style or wing-style turn can pass.

Two Schlage trim turns cover most L-series rose jobs. The Schlage 09-544 027 ADA thumbturn (about $74 at NLS) fits sectional rose trim on doors 1-3/8" to 1-7/8" thick and works for deadbolt functions and privacy locks. For thick doors, the 09-509 047 large ADA thumbturn (L583-363) fits 2-7/8" to 3-5/8" doors. The 09-900 134 626 NH XB11-720 is a 1-3/4" mortise cylinder turn unit with an ADA-style thumbturn, non-handed. The opening force of the door itself is separate: that is a closer question (see the ADA compliance for commercial door hardware guide for the full picture).

Which thumbturn deadbolt function fits the door?

Pick the function by what the outside side must do. Four common arrangements:

  • Single cylinder by thumbturn: key outside, thumbturn inside. The Sargent 485 Grade 1 single cylinder x thumbturn deadbolt (about $189 at NLS) fits 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" doors, 2-3/4" backset standard, LA keyway, with a 1" throw, and is certified A156.36 Grade 1.
  • Thumbturn only (inside only): no outside trim. The Falcon D261 is Grade 2, ANSI E2192, with a 1" projection deadbolt that auto-deadlocks when fully thrown.
  • Thumbturn x thumbturn: the Falcon D251 operates from both sides by turn, with no key on either side. Both D251 and D261 are non-handed, 1-3/8" to 2-1/4" doors, 2-3/8" to 2-3/4" adjustable backset.
  • Cylinder by classroom thumbturn: the Accentra D262 above. For indicators on the thumbturn side, see the occupancy indicator locks guide; the Schlage L9044 06A IS-OCC is a privacy lock with a coin turn outside, a thumbturn inside, and an occupied/vacant indicator.

For mortised deadbolt bodies, the Schlage L460P (conventional cylinder) and L460J (accepts LFIC, no core included) are cylinder by thumbturn small case deadbolts: Grade 1, 1" throw, 1-3/4" door, non-handed, ANSI E06071. For the general selection logic across Grade 1 and Grade 2, read how to choose the best commercial deadbolts. Falcon deadbolts are decoded by series in the Falcon door hardware guide, and the Accentra range in the Accentra Yale commercial hardware guide.

How do I order a thumbturn by brand: cam, length and door thickness?

Order from the lock backward: the lock sets the cylinder, the cylinder sets the length and cam, the door sets the thickness.

Brand Part Length or door thickness Lock it fits
Schlage 09-905 1-1/8" length, 1-3/4" door with rings L463, L9463 classroom deadlocks
Schlage 09-900 134 626 NH 1-3/4" length, ADA-style turn Schlage mortise cylinder turn unit, non-handed
Schlage 09-544 027 Doors 1-3/8" to 1-7/8" L-series sectional rose trim
Schlage 09-509 047 Doors 2-7/8" to 3-5/8" L-series sectional rose trim, large turn
BEST 1EA6A4-C140RP2 1-1/8" length, C140 cam, 1-5/32" diameter BEST 1E mortise, 6-pin, RP2 rings
BEST 1EA6A2-S2RP 1-3/16" rim, 1-5/32" diameter Rim applications, standard spindle
Adams Rite 4066-01 1" length, 1/4" ring for 1-3/4" door MS locks and deadlatches
Falcon 985T 09897-000 1-1/8" length, Falcon M non-deadbolt cam Falcon mortise, M cam
Accentra GF1824 1-7/8" diameter round plate 8800 series mortise

The Adams Rite 4066-01 thumbturn cylinder (about $38 at NLS) interchanges with a standard 1" length, 1-5/32" diameter mortise cylinder. Finishes are 130 (matches 628 clear anodized), 313 dark bronze and 335 black. Cams are chosen for the specific Adams Rite deadlock or deadlatch, so state the lock model. The BEST 1EA6A4 has a diagonal set screw in the cylinder wall that holds it in the housing, and BEST cylinders accept the BEST interchangeable core, so they can be master keyed into an existing BEST system. For the broader cylinder catalog use mortise cylinders. Falcon escutcheon thumbturns also exist as trim: the AE77012-IE (inside Napa escutcheon, thumbturn, no lever opening) and AE77012-IT (lever opening with thumbturn), both for MA series locks. The Sargent 130KBCVR is a cap for the thumbturn hole on 8200 series mortise locks when the turn is removed.

Common mistakes

  1. Ordering without the lock model. A thumbturn cylinder fits a specific cam and lock. "Thumb turn cylinder" is not a part number.
  2. Wrong length. A 1-1/8" cylinder in a door that needs 1" will bind or sit proud. Measure with a ring, not by eye.
  3. Wrong cam. The cam set (C140, Falcon M, L583-254) decides what the turn does to the lock. A correct cylinder with the wrong cam will not retract the latch.
  4. Ignoring hand on classroom cylinders. The 09-905 is handed. Specify door hand or reverse the rotational stop in the field.
  5. Assuming any turn is ADA. Confirm the turn style is an ADA-style grip before specifying it on an accessible opening.
  6. Using a thumbturn cylinder as a lock part for a different brand. A BEST 1E fits BEST housings; other brands need the matching cylinder ring and cam.
  7. Forgetting door thickness on rose trim. The 09-544 covers 1-3/8" to 1-7/8" doors. A thicker door needs the 09-509.
  8. Putting an inside-only thumbturn on a door that needs key egress control from outside. Choose the function first, then the part.

FAQ

What is the difference between a thumb turn and a thumbturn? Nothing functionally. "Thumb turn," "thumbturn" and "thumb turn lock" all describe the inside operator that locks or unlocks without a key. Part listings use the one-word form.

Can I convert a key cylinder to a thumbturn cylinder? Yes, if the thumbturn cylinder matches the original length, diameter and cam. The Adams Rite 4066-01 interchanges with a standard 1" mortise cylinder, and the BEST 1EA6A4 is 1-1/8" with a C140 cam. Confirm both against the lock.

Does a classroom thumbturn let students lock the door from the inside? The Schlage 09-905 is built with a rotational stop that prevents locking from the inside while allowing unlocking, and the stop is field reversible.

Are Falcon D251 and D261 commercial grade? Both are listed as Grade 2 with a 1" deadbolt projection. For Grade 1, the Sargent 485 and Schlage L460 are certified A156.36 Grade 1.
