PHI
Frequently Asked Questions
What is PHI?
PHI is Precision Hardware, an ASSA ABLOY brand focused on exit devices. It is best known for exit devices.
What products does PHI make?
PHI's product range includes Apex and Olympian series rim, mortise, and vertical rod exit devices.
When is PHI panic hardware required by code?
Under the IBC, exit devices like PHI's are required on doors serving assembly or educational occupancies with 50 or more occupants, all high-hazard (Group H) occupancies, and certain large electrical rooms. On fire-rated doors you must use PHI fire exit hardware, which is labeled for both panic and fire and cannot use mechanical dogging.
Where is PHI hardware typically used?
PHI hardware is specified for code-required egress on commercial and institutional doors.
Is PHI hardware commercial grade and code compliant?
Yes. PHI manufactures to commercial standards and tests its products to the applicable ANSI/BHMA A156.3 for exit devices. For most commercial and institutional openings, specify Grade 1 where the product line offers it, and confirm any fire-rating or ADA listings the opening requires.
What is the difference between rim, mortise, and vertical rod PHI exit devices?
Rim devices latch at the frame and are the most common single-door choice. Mortise devices use a mortise lock body for added security. Surface and concealed vertical rod (SVR and CVR) devices latch at the top and bottom for pairs of doors. PHI offers each type so the device matches the door configuration.
