Pick the lock family first, then the indicator code. On a door with a latching lockset that also serves as egress, use a privacy lockset with the window built into the trim (Schlage ND40S OS-OCC, Arrow APL02, Yale AUYPL02, or Corbin Russwin CLX3320 V30 in cylindrical; Schlage L9040 OS-OCC or Sargent 8265 plus the 185P plate in mortise) so the occupant leaves in one motion. On a push/pull door, or where the AHJ accepts an auxiliary bolt, use an indicator deadbolt: Falcon D271 at about $46 at NLS (thumbturn inside, display only outside), Arrow E50 at about $52 (windows both sides, emergency key outside), or Schlage B660 OS-LOC at about $280 for Grade 1 and a keyed cylinder. OS faces the corridor, IS faces the room; OCC reads VACANT/OCCUPIED, LOC reads UNLOCKED/LOCKED. Two traps: B561/B661 OS-OCC have a blank plate inside (staff lock them from the corridor), and B562/B662 double-cylinder indicators do not belong on any door people occupy.

Which types of occupancy indicator locks exist: deadbolt, mortise, or cylindrical?

Three families. The family sets egress behavior, door prep, and price before the brand does; the table carries the ordering specs.

Indicator deadbolts are auxiliary locks (ANSI/BHMA A156.36) with a 1" bolt in a bored prep. The Falcon D271 is a turn unit inside and a display-only face outside, no cylinder. The Arrow E50 is non-keyed, windows on both faces, emergency key outside, two 1/4" thru-bolts. The Yale D291/D292 are thumbturn inside, emergency key outside, windows both sides. Schlage sells the window as an option code on a standard function: B560 IS-OCC and B660 OS-LOC are key outside, thumbturn inside; B561/B661 OS-OCC are key outside, blank plate inside; B562/B662 are double cylinder. Mortise privacy with indicator sits on an A156.13 Grade 1 body. The Schlage L9040 (ANSI F22) locks the outside lever from the inside thumbturn, unlocks when the inside lever turns or the door closes, and admits staff by removing the emergency button and turning an emergency thumbturn in the access hole; the L9044 adds an outside coin turn. The window is offered on over 30 L9000 functions, inside or outside, in English or French. Sargent pairs a body, the 8265 (F22) or 8266 (F19, inside lever retracts latch and deadbolt together), released outside by coin, screwdriver, or the 14-0057 key, with the 185P plate mounted outside showing OCC/VAC through its own coin release. Cylindrical privacy with indicator is an A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 lever lock with the window in the escutcheon or rose. The Schlage ND40S (ANSI F76) locks with a push button in the inside lever, unlocks when the inside lever turns or the door closes, and opens outside through a recessed slot with the emergency key (sold separately) or a flat screwdriver; the trim comes in every ND lever and finish. The Arrow APL02-ST (Sierra lever, coin turn), Yale AUYPL02 (Augusta lever, padlock icon, coin turn, outside lever rigid when locked), and Corbin Russwin CLX3320 NVSL V30 (Newport lever, free-wheeling outside lever, release tool) follow the same F76A logic.

What do OS, IS, OCC, and LOC mean on an indicator lock?

Schlage's suffix has two halves. The first names the face: OS puts the window on the outside (corridor) side, IS on the inside (room) side. The second names the message: OCC displays VACANT/OCCUPIED, LOC displays UNLOCKED/LOCKED, unlocked on white and locked on red. People waiting in a corridor need OS-OCC; the occupant of an office or classroom who wants to confirm the door is secured needs IS-LOC. When both matter, the Arrow E50 and Yale D291/D292 carry windows on both faces as standard, and the Corbin Russwin CLX3300 offers inside, outside, or both (V30 is the single outside window).

Wording and color are brand conventions. Sargent's 185P reads OCC/VAC; Arrow, Yale AUYPL02, Corbin Russwin, and Best use icons or colored windows, and the Arrow E50 V54 swaps red/green for red/white with words. Red/white with words carries for red-green color-deficient users; icons are language-neutral, which matters in a transit hub or a multilingual hospital.

The emergency release is a third axis, and the D271 is the one to watch: its outside face is a display only, so specify it where a lockout is acceptable. Every other product above opens from outside with a key, coin, screwdriver, or release tool. Which indicator lock fits a single-occupancy restroom, wellness room, exam room, or office?

The ND escutcheon is function-specific (eight functions: two privacy, three security, each also in a Vandlgard version), so the same window is ordered as IS-LOC on the keyed ND53 and ND50, and the L Series window covers the L9050 office lock; the desk quotes keyed combinations. What codes touch indicator locks: ADA operability, IBC privacy and signage, egress?

ADA. The 2010 ADA Standards (309.4, 404.2.7) require hardware operable with one hand without tight grasping, pinching, or wrist twisting, 5 lbf maximum, mounted 34" to 48" above the floor. The occupant-side control has to comply: the push button in the inside lever, the mortise thumbturn, and the deadbolt thumbturn on the B560/B660, which Schlage lists as ADA compliant. The outside coin turn, key, or slot is a staff override, not a user control. Interior opening force stays at 5 lbf (404.2.9), which caps the closer you add so the auto-unlock-on-close feature sees a closed door. IBC privacy and signage. The IBC requires doors to family or assisted-use toilet and bathing rooms to be securable from within (1109.2.1.6 in the 2018 edition, 1110.2.1.6 in 2021), and the 2021 edition (2902.1.2) requires single-user toilet rooms to be identified for use by either sex. The securing device meets the first, a tactile sign per ICC A117.1 the second. The window is what stops people knocking.

Egress. IBC 1010.1.9 (2018) and NFPA 101 7.2.1.5 require egress doors to open from the egress side without a key, special knowledge, or effort, and IBC 1010.1.9.5 limits unlatching to one operation. A latching lever lock plus an indicator deadbolt is two operations, which is why the window went into the privacy lockset: every privacy lockset above unlocks when the inside lever turns, and the 8266 retracts latch and deadbolt in that motion. An indicator deadbolt on a push/pull door is one operation. Schlage's own caution calls the B562 and B662 double cylinders a life safety hazard on any egress door, and the B562 cannot be ordered UL 10C rated.

Grade, backset, door prep, and retrofitting an indicator onto an existing lock

Grade by standard. Deadbolts test to A156.36: B500, Arrow E50, and Yale D291/D292 at Grade 2, B600 at Grade 1, the Falcon D271 to the older A156.5 at Grade 2. Cylinder format moves the Schlage grade: SFIC drops a B500 to Grade 3, FSIC drops a B600 to Grade 2 and SFIC to Grade 3, so specify conventional where the grade is written into the spec. Cylindrical indicator locks test to A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 (the AUYPL02 only at 2-3/4" backset); mortise bodies to A156.13 Grade 1, and the Sargent 8200 has passed a 16 million cycle UL test.

Prep, handing, fire doors. Cylindrical indicator locks and the E50 take the A156.115 2-1/8" bore with through-bolts (CLX3320: 4-1/2" minimum stile); mortise bodies take the A156.115 pocket with an 8" x 1-1/4" front. Every cylindrical and deadbolt product above is non-handed (the E50 ships RH, converts to LH); the L9000 and 8200 are field reversible. ND indicator trim keeps the standard ND UL 10C listing, APL02 and AUYPL02 list for 3-hour doors, B600 indicator deadbolts are UL 10C 3-hour, B500 is available 3-hour except the B562, and D291/D292 list with the primary latching device up to 3-hour hollow metal. NFPA 80 limits field modification of a labeled door, so a retrofit on a rated opening gets the AHJ's sign-off first.

Retrofit onto a lock already in the door. The ND retrofit kit fits any ND lever style and the L Series kit any installed L9000, both function-specific and quoted by the desk. The Sargent 185P bolts to the outside of a 7800/8200 body in 26D, 3, 4, 10, 10B, 26, or 32D. The Best 40HVITH adds a red-locked, green-unlocked thumb-turn to 40H sectional trim. The Yale YA194 V01 is an interior Unlocked/Locked window for Best or Schlage sectional trim, UL classified on 3-hour doors with the L9000 or Best 45H/34H/35H. The Corbin Russwin ML197 V06 is an interior white/red icon window for ML2000 sectional trim, not for master ring cylinders. Common mistakes when ordering indicator locks

1. Window on the wrong face: OS-OCC for rooms people wait outside of, IS-LOC for rooms people secure from within.

2. Indicator deadbolt plus a latching lever on an egress door: two operations to leave. Use a privacy indicator lockset, or a deadbolt on a push/pull.

3. B561 or B661 OS-OCC on a restroom: the inside is a blank plate, so the occupant cannot lock it. Specify B660 OS-LOC or a privacy lockset.

4. No spacer kit on an ND indicator for a 1-3/8" or 1-11/16" door, or a D291 ordered for a 2-3/4" prep.

5. Expecting Grade 2 on a B500 with an SFIC core: the certification drops to Grade 3.

6. No emergency keys on the staff ring. The ND40S key and the Sargent 14-0057 are sold separately; the E50 and D291/D292 keys belong with the cleaning crew.

7. Treating the window as the room sign. Tactile signage per A117.1 is still required.

FAQ

Is an occupancy indicator lock the same as a privacy lock? No. Privacy is the function (F76 cylindrical, F22 or F19 mortise): an inside button or thumbturn locks the outside lever, an emergency release opens it, closing the door resets it. The indicator is trim that displays the state; most privacy locks show nothing.

Can staff open an indicator deadbolt from outside? The Arrow E50 and Yale D291/D292 use an emergency key, the Schlage B660 and B560 use their cylinder, and the Falcon D271's outside face is a display only. Privacy locksets open with a coin, screwdriver, emergency key, or release tool depending on brand.

Red/green or red/white? Red/white with words (Schlage OCC and LOC, Arrow E50 V54) reads for red-green color-deficient users and needs no explanation. Red/green icons (Arrow E50, APL02, AUYPL02, CLX3320) are language-neutral. Pick one convention per building.

Can I add an indicator to a lock already installed? Yes: ND retrofit kit, L Series retrofit kit, Sargent 185P for 7800/8200, Best 40HVITH for 40H, Yale YA194 for Best 45H/34H/35H and L9000 sectional trim, Corbin ML197 for ML2000. Match function, hand, trim style, and finish before ordering.
