Access Control System Accessories and What They Do

Access control system accessories are the components around the lock, strike and power supply that give a door manual override, wireless release, scheduling and status monitoring. They are sold by function, so identify the job first, then match the contact type, mounting and brand. The table groups the catalog.

Keyswitches: Momentary vs Maintained

A momentary keyswitch springs back after the key is turned, and a maintained keyswitch stays in position until it is turned again. Momentary switches suit a pulse to a controller, such as the Securitron MK mortise keyswitch. Maintained or alternate action versions suit holding a door unlocked. SPDT contacts switch one circuit and DPDT contacts switch two. The Schlage Electronics 653 series lists clockwise and counter clockwise action and is sold less cylinder. The BEA combo plate pairs a push plate with a keyswitch, see the BEA 10COMBOPLATE jamb push plate with keyswitch.

Door Position Switches

A door position switch tells the system whether the door is open or closed and is the basis for held open and forced door alarms. Choose by door: 679-05 for wood doors and frames, 679-05HM for hollow metal doors, 679-05WD for wood doors in metal frames, the 7764 for flush mounting, and the 7766 for surface mounting. The 679-05HM concealed switch is one example.

Wireless Receivers and Transmitters

A wireless receiver turns a radio signal from a transmitter into a contact closure that releases the lock. The receiver and transmitter must use the same frequency, which is why BEA sells separate 433 MHz and 900 MHz receivers; both run on 12 to 24 VAC/VDC. The BEA 10RD433 receiver is the 433 MHz option. RCI offers receiver modules for its 910TC and 912 series.

Timers, Surface Boxes and Covers

A day timer controls when a device is active, so doors can unlock on a schedule, as with the RCI TD365 day timer. Surface boxes carry a switch on a wall or jamb where no recessed box exists, and the Camden CM-23 narrow jamb box is made for narrow jambs. Protective covers shield switches from accidental use.

Power Transfer, Sounders and Touch Bar Parts

A power transfer device carries power across the hinge or edge of a door, and the Dorma ES105 power transfer is made for specific exit device options. The Schlage Electronics 800A sounder and 800L1 LED plate add local alerts, while the 801 monitoring station adds LEDs and a sounder. Securitron touch bar replacement sensors, cables and cover plates restore TSB series bars.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a keyswitch used for in an access control system?

A keyswitch gives a person with a key manual control at the door, usually to unlock or lock an electrified opening, bypass a schedule, or send a signal to the controller. It is wired as a contact to the lock circuit or access control panel, so the key works even if the reader is offline.

What is the difference between a momentary and a maintained keyswitch?

A momentary keyswitch returns to its center position after the key is released and sends a short pulse. A maintained keyswitch stays in the turned position until it is turned back. Use momentary for pulse inputs and maintained when a door must stay unlocked or a function must stay on.

How do I choose between a 433 MHz and 900 MHz wireless receiver?

Choose the frequency that matches the transmitter, since a receiver and transmitter must operate on the same one. BEA sells separate 433 MHz and 900 MHz receivers, both for 12 to 24 VAC/VDC. If you are adding to an existing system, check the label on the current transmitter.

What is an electric power transfer and when is it required?

An electric power transfer carries power from the frame to the door so an electrified device can operate on a moving door. It is needed for electrified exit devices, locks and hardware in the door leaf. The Dorma ES105 is listed for ES, DE and MLR options; confirm compatibility first.

Do I need a surface mount box for my keyswitch or push plate?

You need one when there is no recessed box to mount the switch in, such as on a masonry wall or a narrow jamb. Surface boxes are listed by width and depth, for example the Camden CM-23 narrow jamb box. Check the gang size so the switch fits.

What does a day timer do in an access control system?

A day timer sets when a device is active so a door can unlock or release automatically at certain times, for example during business hours. It reduces manual unlocking and works alongside a keyswitch or controller. Check the listing for the number of schedules and the relay rating.

What is the difference between SPDT and DPDT?

SPDT has one set of contacts that switches a single circuit between two positions. DPDT has two sets, so it can switch two circuits at once, such as a lock and a status signal. Choose DPDT when you need to control two separate devices from one key turn.

Which door position switch fits my door?

It depends on the door material and mounting. The 679-05 is for wood doors and frames, the 679-05HM for hollow metal doors, the 679-05WD for wood doors in metal frames, the 7764 flush mounts and the 7766 surface mounts. Tell us the door and frame type if unsure.

Do Schlage Electronics keyswitches come with a cylinder?

The 653 series keyswitches in our catalog are listed less cylinder, so you add a cylinder to match your keying. The listing shows the contact type (SPDT or DPDT), the turn direction and whether the action is momentary or maintained, which you should match to the controller.
