BEST HD8000 and EHD9000: Grade 1 surface closers
BEST makes two surface closer series in our catalog, and both are listed as Grade 1 with an adjustable size from 1 to 6. The HD8000 is described as a Grade 1 hydraulic surface closer for institutional or high-traffic commercial doors, and every HD8016 listing is non-handed. The EHD9000 is described by BEST as built for the highest traffic areas, with adjustable backcheck and a plastic cover on the EHD9016 AF90P. Because the spring size is adjustable 1 to 6, one closer covers many door widths and weights.
Choose the arm before the closer
The arm decides where the closer mounts and what it can do, so pick it first. BEST lists the HD8016 with many arms; the letters after the model are the arm code.
| Arm code | Arm (as listed) | Mounting | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| AF80P, AF90P | Tri mount flat form parallel arm | Regular, top jamb or parallel arm | General use; one box covers three mountings |
| PHP | Parallel/top jamb plunger hold open arm | Push side | Hold open by plunger |
| FHP | Friction hold open arm | See listing | Hold open at any angle within range |
| SPAT | Super parallel arm, thumbturn hold open | Parallel arm | Heavy use, hold open by thumbturn |
| DST | Parallel arm, hold open and stop | Parallel arm | Hold open plus a door stop |
| SDST | Parallel arm, hold open and compression stop | Parallel arm | Hold open plus cushioned stop |
| IS, SIS | Regular/top jamb arm with stop or compression stop | Regular or top jamb | Stops the door without hold open |
| ISJH, SISJH | Top jamb arm, hold open and stop or compression stop | Top jamb | Hold open plus stop from the top jamb |
| LA | Less arm | None | Replace the closer body and keep the arm |
Regular, top jamb or parallel arm mounting
Regular arm mounting puts the closer on the pull side of the door with the arm on the frame. Top jamb mounting puts the closer on the frame above the door on the push side. Parallel arm mounting puts the closer on the push side of the door, with the arm folded parallel to it, which keeps hardware off the corridor side and is common on public doors. Tri mount arms such as the AF80P and AF90P are boxed to cover all three, which is useful when the final mounting is not yet decided.
Hold open, stop and delayed action
Hold open arms keep the door open at a set angle, and stop arms limit how far it opens. Hold open is not allowed on fire doors that must close on their own; those openings follow NFPA 80 and need a release on alarm instead. Compression stops (SDST, SIS, SISJH) cushion the door at the stop. The HD8016DA AF80P adds delayed action, which slows the start of the closing cycle to give people with mobility aids or carts more time to pass.
How to choose a heavy duty door closer
For heavy or high-traffic doors, choose a Grade 1 closer with enough spring size, a strong arm and backcheck. The ANSI/BHMA A156.4 standard covers door closers, and Grade 1 is its heaviest duty level. Set the size for the door width and location (exterior doors need more force against wind), and use a parallel arm with a stop where the door could be thrown open. For accessible openings, the closing speed and opening force are adjusted on site under the ADA 2010 Standards 404.2.8 and 404.2.9.
BEST closer parts and replacement bodies
When an HD8000 leaks or will not control the door, the HD8016 LA (less arm) lets you replace the body and keep a good arm. Arms, covers and other parts are listed in BEST door closer parts. The BEST HD8000 and EHD9000 closer catalogs are attached to our product pages.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the best door closer for a commercial door?
The right closer depends on the door. For high-traffic commercial doors, a Grade 1 hydraulic surface closer with an adjustable size, such as the BEST HD8000 or EHD9000 listed here, is the usual choice. Then choose the arm for the mounting and functions you need, such as hold open or stop.
What does AF80P mean on a BEST closer?
AF80P is the tri mount flat form parallel arm. It is boxed to install as a regular, top jamb or parallel arm closer, so one product covers the three standard mountings. The EHD9016 uses the matching AF90P arm.
Are BEST door closers ADA compliant?
A closer helps an opening comply when it is adjusted correctly. The ADA 2010 Standards set closing speed in 404.2.8 and opening force for interior doors in 404.2.9, and adjustable closers like the HD8000 can be set on site. Confirm the full opening with your code official.
