Pick the series from the latch, then the frame, then the fire label. Cylindrical latch to 5/8": 5000C in a cut frame, 8000 when the frame cannot be cut; the same latch on a labeled frame: 4500C cut-in or 8300 no-cut. Cylindrical latch at 3/4": 5200, with in-frame horizontal adjustment. Mortise latch without deadbolt on a labeled metal frame: 8500. Mortise with a 1" deadbolt, or a lock not yet identified: 1006. Which HES electric strike do I need? The four questions that pick the series
HES sorts the line by what enters the keeper, not by door type. Four answers pick the series; the table carries the spec.
1. What latches into it? Cylindrical (5/8" or 3/4" throw), mortise (with or without deadbolt), Pullman rim latch (1/2" or 3/4"), Adams Rite Starwheel, concealed vertical rods, or an Adams Rite-style hookbolt (1006, R faceplate). 2. What frame? Hollow metal with a 4-7/8" ANSI prep takes every series on its standard faceplate. Aluminum storefront needs the universal-tab plates (501A, 502, 503, 801A, 802) on a body that lists aluminum: 7000, 8000, 8300, 9800. The 1006, 5000C, 5200 and the 9x00 list metal and wood (wood screws not supplied on the 9x00); the 4500C and 8500 list metal only.
3. Is the frame labeled? Five series carry a fire listing on their NLS pages: 1006, 4500C and 9500 (UL 10C, 3-hour single door) plus 8300 and 8500 (fire rated, NFPA 80-07 retrofit guidelines). All five hold in fail secure only, because NFPA 80 requires a fire door to latch on its own.
4. Surface, concealed or cut-in? Surface bodies (9400, 9500, 9600, 9800, 310) need no cutting and no faceplate. Concealed retrofits (8000, 8300, 8500) go in behind the existing ANSI strike plate without cutting; the commercial door strike plates guide decodes the plate you are pulling. HES electric strikes for cylindrical locks: 5000C, 5200, 7000, 4500C, 8000 and 8300
Six series take a cylindrical latch; the split is throw, whether the frame can be cut, and whether it is labeled. Strength is 1,500 lbs static and 70 ft-lbs dynamic across the group except the 4500C (100 ft-lbs) and the 7000's S options (1,000 lbs, 50 ft-lbs).
5000C: the low-profile body for jambs with little room behind them; a 5/8" latch needs a 1/8" door gap. C means complete: 501 and 501A faceplates and trim enhancer in the box. The HES 5000C-630 complete low-profile strike is about $151 at NLS.
5200: same family, keeper sized for 5/8" to 3/4", plus in-frame horizontal adjustment that shifts the opening to the latchbolt after the body is screwed in. Body only. The HES 5200 body with horizontal adjustability is the pick when an old frame's latch centerline cannot be trusted.
7000: the preload body. In-frame adjustable, with a preload release that keeps the keeper moving under up to 15 lbs of door pressure (fail secure only): the fix for weatherstripped, warped or HVAC-pressurized doors that bind a standard strike. The 786S and 789S options include a pocket adapter.
4500C: the fire-rated cut-in, 1-3/8" deep to keep 1/2" drywall penetration in a 2" UL 10C frame, two faceplates included (cylindrical and mortise).
8000 and 8300: the concealed retrofits. Remove the 4-7/8" ANSI strike plate, set the vertical alignment feature to the latch centerline, install. Same 1-1/16" by 1-7/16" body, same 801/801A/801E/802 faceplates. The HES 8000 concealed strike is about $162 for unlabeled frames; the HES 8300 fire-rated concealed strike adds the fire listing and NFPA 80-07 retrofit compliance for about $384.
HES electric strikes for mortise locks: 1006, 4500C, 8500 (and where the 1500 and 1600 sit)
A mortise lock asks two questions the cylindrical series never do: is there a deadbolt, and whose case is behind the faceplate.
8500: the no-deadbolt answer on a labeled metal frame. Remove the strike plate and dust box, install; full pocket shims handle horizontal adjustment. The faceplate is lock-specific: 851M for Sargent 8100/8200/9200, 852K for Corbin Russwin ML2000, 852L for Schlage L9000, 852M for Yale 8700 (post-2005) and 8800, Accurate, Falcon and Kaba Ilco/Unican. A deadbolt rules it out.
1006: the deadbolt case and every unknown. Dual interlocking plunger, 2,500 lbs static and 350 ft-lbs dynamic, up to a 1" deadbolt, full keeper shims. The body is universal and the faceplate adapts: J for cylindrical latches to 3/4", J-2 and KM-2 for cylindrical and mortise in wood, E for Corbin Russwin Security Bolt, Weiserbolt and 1" tubular deadbolts, R for Adams Rite-style hookbolts to 1", Z for unit and mono locks. Fail safe is the 1006-F body, not a switch. The one-box route is the 1006CS: body, SMART Pac III and a faceplate and bracket set reproducing the J, K, KD, KM, H, HD, HM, HT, HTD, N, ND and NM options, so one SKU covers cylindrical and mortise with or without a 1" deadbolt. 4500C covers a 3/4" mortise latch on a labeled metal frame when the pocket can be cut and there is no deadbolt.
1500 and 1600 are also in the line; NLS stocks their trim enhancer kits and the 1600 lip extension adaptor, and bodies go through the desk with the lock model in hand.
HES electric strikes for rim exit devices: 9400, 9500, 9600, 9800 and the Folger Adam 310
Rim devices get surface strikes: no faceplate, no cutting, and thickness plus throw are the whole decision.
9400: 1/2" thick for a 1/2" Pullman, one 1/8" spacer plate for door-gap variance. The HES 9400 slim-line surface strike is not fire rated and does not take a 3/4" latch.
9500: 3/4" thick for a 3/4" Pullman, separate base and cover for adjustment, UL 10C 3-hour in fail secure only, NFPA 80-07 retrofit, California Fire Marshal and WHI listed.
9600: the same 3/4" housing built for windstorm: 2,000 lbs static and 120 ft-lbs dynamic, ANSI/SDI A250.13, Florida TAS 201/202/203, ASTM E330, no fire listing. Coastal storefront and hurricane-zone exits go here.
9800: not a Pullman strike. Built for Adams Rite 8700 and 8800 Series Starwheel and Interlocking rim devices, 1/2" body, 1/16" and 1/8" spacer plates. A 9400 on a Starwheel or a 9800 on a Pullman will not engage.
Confirm the device's latch throw before choosing the 9400 over the 9500/9600: the Von Duprin part numbers guide shows where it sits in the 98/99 model string, and the Kawneer exit device guide covers storefront devices whose keepers are a different geometry.
Folger Adam 310-6: the concealed vertical rod answer, sold under HES. Vertically mounted, all stainless, PK keeper for 3/4" Pullman-style bolts, fail secure standard with fail safe and LCBMA monitoring as options. The 310-6-1 at 4-3/8" CTC serves both leaves of a pair with rod spacing of 4" to 4-3/4", ordered as 12D or 24D in 627.

Power sizing follows the series: the 5000C, 5200 and 4500C draw 240 mA at 12 VDC (120 at 24) and are PoE friendly; the 1006 and the 9x00 family draw 450 mA (250 at 24); the 310 draws 510 mA. Add every strike on the run before picking the supply amperage.
Frame prep, faceplates and retrofit fillers: 501/801/851 plates, 5200-500, 7000-104/105/108
Body-only series (5200, 7000, 8000, 8300, 8500, 1006) need the faceplate as a second line, chosen by frame and lock: 501 or 801 for ANSI metal jambs; 501A, 502, 503, 801A or 802 for aluminum; 504, J-2 or KM-2 for wood; 801E when a knock-down frame needs the extended lip; 851M/852K/852L/852M by mortise lock brand on the 8500; 791 or 792 on the 7000. The 5200-500 filler block fits a 5200 into a jamb cut-out 11/16" deeper than it needs; the 5200-105 trim enhancer dresses the old outline. On the 7000, the 7000-104 lip extension trim adapter and 7000-105 goof plate fit the 791 and 792 options only, and the 7000-108 1/8" spacer plate (black only) fits the 783S and 789S. The 1500-106, 1600-104 and 1600-106 do the same for the 1500, 1600 and ES100.
Common mistakes when ordering HES strikes

Ordering a body-only series (5200, 7000, 8000, 8300, 8500, 1006) and expecting a faceplate in the box.

Which HES electric strike works with both cylindrical and mortise locks? The 1006 through its faceplate options (J for cylindrical, KM-2 for mortise, the 1006CS kit for deadbolts) and the 4500C, which ships with both faceplates and no deadbolt provision.
