Frequently Asked Questions
What is a deadbolt?
A deadbolt is a mechanical lock that uses a solid steel bolt instead of a spring latch. At National Lock Supply, we offer single- and double-cylinder deadbolts, known for being stronger than knob or lever locks alone.
How do deadbolts differ from latch locks?
Latch locks use a spring latch that can sometimes be forced back. Deadbolts extend a solid bolt deep into the strike plate, making them more resistant to prying, kicking, or shim attacks.
What types of deadbolts are available?
Single Cylinder: Keyed outside, thumbturn inside.
Double Cylinder: Keyed both sides, used near glass to prevent break-in.
Institutional/Classroom: Specialized ANSI functions.
What door prep is required?
Deadbolts fit a 2-1/8″ bore and 1″ edge bore with backsets of 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″—the same prep as many cylindrical locks, making them easy to pair together.
What grades are offered?
Deadbolts are ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, 2, or 3. Grade 1 is heavy-duty commercial, Grade 2 suits residential/light commercial, and Grade 3 is basic residential.
Are deadbolts ADA compliant?
Yes, if fitted with lever-style thumbturns that require minimal force. Double-cylinder deadbolts are generally not ADA compliant.
Where are deadbolts commonly used?
They are standard on exterior doors for homes, apartments, and offices. Often, a deadbolt is paired with a cylindrical knob or lever lock.
What finishes are available?
Satin Nickel, Satin Chrome, Oil-Rubbed Bronze, Bright Brass, and Matte Black are common, matching handlesets and other door hardware.
Can deadbolts be keyed alike with other locks?
Yes. Deadbolts often share SC1 or KW1 keyways, allowing them to be rekeyed to match lever, knob, or mortise locks in the same building.
Why buy deadbolts from National Lock Supply?
We carry Grade 1 and 2 deadbolts in all functions and finishes, with expert help to choose the right cylinder and security level for your door.
